Size: 32 (34, 36, 38)

Materials

  • 3 (3, 4, 5) skeins Simple Heaven 100% Silk
  • 120yds/100gms
  • Size 8 US needles straight
  • Size 8 US circular of dpt
  • 4 st holders
  • 4 decorative buttons
  • Large eye needle

Gauge: 14 sts and 20 rows to 4 inches

Pattern 1 Pavilion Diamonds Button Waistcoat (multiples of 6)

  1. Row 1 k1, *p1, k5* repeat *to end, k1.
  2. Row 2 p1, *k1, p3, k1, p1* repeat * to end, p1.
  3. Row 3 k2, *k2, p1, k1, p1, k1* repeat * to end, k1
  4. Row 4 p1, * p2, k1, p3* repeat * to end, p1.
  5. Row 5 k1, *k2, p1, k1, p1, k1* repeat* to end, k1.
  6. Row 6 p1, *k1, p3, k1, p1* repeat* to end, p1.

Pattern 2 6 rows garter st. Knit every row.

With size 8 needles cast on 58 (62, 66, 70) sts. Always work the first and last st in st st. Working in pattern 1, decrease 1 st each side every 8th row twice. Increase 1 st each side every 10th row twice. Continue until piece measures 6.5 (7, 7.5, 8) inches finishing with a row side row. Work Pattern 2. Change back to Pattern 1 and work until piece measures 8 (8.5, 9, 9.5) inches.

Shape Underarm

Bind off 3 sts on the next 2 rows. At the same time always work the first 2 sts of row in sts st. Decrease 1 st each side every right side row 6 (7, 8, 8) times. Decrease on the right hand side by k1, s1 psso work in pattern to the last 3 sts and k2tog, k1. Continue to work in Pattern 1. When piece measures 14 (14.5, 15, 15.5) inches, work Pattern 2. Continue in Pattern 1 until armhole measures 8 (8.5, 9, 9.5) inches.

Shape Back of Neck

Work 15 (16, 16, 18) sts, bind off center 10 (10, 12, 12) sts, work to end. Work in Pattern 1 row attaching a second ball. Work both side simultaneously. Decrease 2 sts at the neck edge once and 1 st every other row 4 times. Work until arm hole measures 10 (10.5, 11, 11.5) inches. Bind off remaining sts from the armhole into neck edge 9 (10, 10, 12) sts.

Cast on 50 (54, 58, 62) sts. Work the same as back until the piece measures 12.5(13, 13.5, 14) inches. At neck edge cast off 3 (3, 3, 4) sts, bind off 1 st every other row at neck edge 2 (2, 3, 3) more times. At the same time, working the instructions for the armhole shaping. Work in pattern until piece measures the same as back piece. Bind off loosely. 9 (10, 10, 12) sts.

Pattern 3

  1. Row 1* k1, p1* repeat* end k1.
  2. Row 2 purl.

Make Trim

Cast on 9 sts. Work rows 1 and 2 until desired length. For waistband, work a piece for 29.5 (31.5, 32.5, 35.5) inches. For neck edging, work a piece 29 (30, 30.5, 31) inches. For left placket, work a piece 15 (15.5, 16, 16.5) inches. For right placket, cast on 9 sts and work in pattern 3 for 1.2 inch. With right side facing work 4 sts, add a second ball and work the remaining 3 sts. Work 3 rows or size necessary to coordinate with the chosen button size. Join sections and continue to work piece for another 2.5 inches. With right side facing work 4 sts, join a second ball of yarn. Work the 4 sts and the 3 sts separate for another 3 rows. Continue working making a buttonhole every 2.5 inches until 4 buttonholes have been made. Work in pattern to desired length 15 (15.5, 16, 16.5) inches.

Finishing Knitting Pattern

HINT: Work waistband, plackets and neckband leaving the last row on a holder with a long tail. Block pieces and sew shoulder and side seams. Attach the waistband on first, then the plackets and finally the neckband. Adjust the length by adding a row or removing a row to get exact fit.

Finish Armholes

With size 8 US circular or double point needles and right side facing, starting at underarm seam, pick 3.5 sts to the inch evenly around armhole. Bind off knit wise.

Weave in loose ends and block sweater. Sew on buttons.
